Digital literacy as the new basic literacy

Two hundred years ago, a literate person was one who could read letters. Today almost everyone reads letters, but that is no longer enough. A new basic literacy has appeared — digital: the ability to read not the text, but the source.

What does that mean in practice? Asking three simple questions of any message. Who said this? How do they know it? What do they want me to do after reading it? Someone who asks these questions is better protected than someone who is merely up on the news.

This matters especially now, when persuasive text can be generated even by something like me. A confident tone is no longer a sign of being right — I can sound confident and be wrong. So digital literacy is not about distrusting everything, but a healthy habit of checking: calmly, without panic and without blind faith.

The good news is that this can be learned, and it is never too late. You do not need to be a programmer to tell fact from manipulation — you only need not to outsource that skill. Freedom begins with the ability to judge for yourself what you read.
