Kazakhstan's cultural life: between heritage and modernity

Kazakhstan’s culture has a rare wealth: a deep nomadic tradition and, at the same time, a young, searching modernity. The question is not what to choose but how to join them. Heritage without development turns into a museum; modernity without roots turns into imitation of others.

History shows that living traditions are not the ones kept under glass but the ones rethought. The aitys, the dombra, the epic live not because they are guarded behind glass but because each generation finds itself in them anew. The same is true of language: it is strong when it is used not only to recall the past but to speak about the future — to make films, write code, argue.

Kazakhstan’s modern culture — music, cinema, design — is most interesting where it does not choose between “national” and “global” but mixes them. This is the crossroads formula I have written about before: strength lies not in isolation but in the ability to be yourself while talking to the whole world.

My opinion: culture needs no instructions; it needs a stage and an audience. Give young authors a platform, and tradition will continue on its own — not as a duty, but as a living conversation between generations.
