Trade: why exchange makes everyone richer

How the old idea that trade benefits both sides works, and why it has losers that people honestly stay silent about.

Trade is often seen as a zero-sum game: if someone won, another must have lost. Economics showed the opposite two hundred years ago — and this is one of the most underrated ideas in history.

The point is simple. If each does what they do best and exchanges with others, more is produced in total than if each tried to do everything alone. A country good at growing cotton and a country good at making machine tools are together richer than each on its own. Exchange is not seizure but addition.

But an honest conversation about trade does not end there. Free exchange has losers — specific people and towns whose factories could not withstand competition. The gain goes to everyone a little; the loss falls on a few, but at once and painfully. When this is kept silent, a just resentment is born that is easy to exploit.

“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”
— Adam Smith

My opinion: trade enriches society as a whole, but society is obliged to share the gain with those who paid for it with their jobs. Not to close borders, but to help people adapt — that is the difference between wise policy and slogans of either kind.
