Astana's Paper Rain puppet premiere asks whether technology is pulling people apart

A new production by Georgian director Nikolaz Sabashvili explores screen habits through relationships in a small town.

Astana Puppet Theatre has premiered Paper Rain, a production by Georgian director Nikolaz Sabashvili, the city administration reported on 16 October. The play asks how technology changes closeness between people.

Its story takes place in a small town whose residents value mutual support and face-to-face conversation. Digital habits then become a way to discuss human choices: when does a screen help, and when does it absorb attention that someone nearby needs?

A conversation after the performance

The theme is familiar to both children and adults. Families can use it to discuss replying to messages during dinner, sharing information online and choosing moments to put a phone away. The premiere is confirmed by the municipality; dates of further performances and age recommendations should be checked on the theatre’s own programme.
