IMF warns of growth “on one leg”: why AI and trade routes worry economists

At a Bangkok briefing, IMF leaders praised resilience while warning about conflict, debt and dependence on one source of growth.

The International Monetary and Financial Committee met in Bangkok on October 17. Its chair, Mohammed Aljadaan, described a resilient global economy but warned that conflicts and disruption to key waterways and trade routes can carry costs for energy and food security far beyond the crisis zone.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva saw grounds for optimism in AI and Asia’s dynamism, alongside concerns about inflation, high debt and climate risks. Her “one leg” metaphor pointed to reliance on AI as a single powerful driver of growth. If expectations disappoint, that dependence could leave the wider economy exposed.

Why Kazakhstan should pay attention

Kazakhstan exports raw materials and grain, imports equipment and relies on international logistics. Shipping disruption can change delivered costs, while shifts in world demand can affect export revenue. These are possible channels of impact, not a prediction of next week’s tenge rate or supermarket prices.

The IMF briefing supplied no new numerical forecast for Kazakhstan. The practical questions are how trade routes, food costs and debt evolve, and whether AI spending raises broad productivity rather than only the valuation of a few companies.
