Kazakhstan and Belgium Set Priorities in Minerals, AI and Transport

Kazakhstan and Belgium issued a joint statement after October 12 talks, naming critical minerals, the Trans-Caspian route, cloud computing and data centers. The document sets cooperation priorities; it does not announce completed commercial deals.

Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are on a state visit to Kazakhstan from October 11 to 14. After talks on October 12, Akorda published a joint statement by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and King Philippe. Its value lies in the specific areas the two sides say they want to pursue.

The economic section names critical minerals, petrochemicals, industry, machinery, renewable energy, agriculture and trade. It highlights the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route as a connection between Asia and Europe. The technology section expresses interest in cooperation on artificial intelligence, big data, cloud technology, supercomputing infrastructure and data centers.

The statement also backs university partnerships, joint research and academic mobility. Its words, however, express interest and intent. They do not mean that investment has already arrived, a data center has been built or a minerals supply contract has been signed. To judge the outcome of the visit, readers will need to see subsequent agreements with named partners, amounts, timelines and delivery milestones.
