A new direction for Kazakhstan’s economy? What the cabinet actually decided
The Economic Policy Council discussed investment, industry and regions. For now, ministries have been asked to assess proposals.
Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov chaired a meeting of Kazakhstan’s Economic Policy Council on 19 October. International experts presented recommendations, and participants discussed global markets. The agenda covered diversification beyond raw materials, industrial policy, foreign investment, private enterprise and regional specialisation.
For companies and households, the test is which proposals turn into decisions with deadlines and accountable agencies. The government’s statement announced no new support programme, tax change or specific investment package. Bektenov instructed public bodies to analyse the ideas. That is a preparatory step, so a concrete economic outcome should not yet be assumed.
Regional progress needs to be judged by production, jobs and household incomes as well as investment totals. Small businesses need access to finance and markets; industry needs predictable rules and demand. The next useful signal will be published measures following the review of expert recommendations.
