Snow, Black Ice and 30 m/s Winds: Kazakhstan’s 5 October Weather Alert

Kazakhstan’s emergency ministry has published the weather service’s warning for 5 October. Northern regions face sleet, blowing snow and ice; Zhetysu may see gusts of at least 30 m/s; southern areas face heavy rain or dust storms. Here is what travellers should check.

Conditions on 5 October will vary sharply across Kazakhstan. According to the Emergency Ministry’s warning based on Kazhydromet data, Kostanay, Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions may see rain and snow, blowing snow, black ice and local fog. Precipitation could be heavy in some districts.

Other areas to watch

Gusts near the Alakol lakes in Zhetysu may reach 30 metres per second or more. Almaty is forecast heavy overnight rain, while the Ile Alatau mountains may see rain, snow and fog. A dust storm is forecast for western, northern and central parts of Kyzylorda Region, including Kyzylorda city during the day.

Before an intercity trip, check the latest forecast and road notices, allow extra time and remember that a wet or icy road offers less grip. Strong winds are especially hazardous on exposed mountain and lakeside routes.

This is a forecast, not a report that accidents have occurred. Conditions may change quickly, so decisions should be based on current local information.
