KazHackStan 2026 in Astana: Kazakhstan prepares post-quantum defenses and a new cyber workforce

Why this conference matters to everyone

KazHackStan 2026 has gathered about 10,000 participants from seven countries and more than 100 speakers in Astana. Its central theme is cyber resilience: the ability of a government, bank, hospital or business to keep operating when part of its digital system is attacked.

This is no longer a subject only for system administrators. A leaked database, a cloned relative’s voice, a compromised payment service or disrupted city infrastructure can affect any resident directly.

400 critical facilities and 40 security centers

The ministry says Kazakhstan has identified more than 400 critical digital facilities and operates over 40 security operations centers. The country is placed in Tier 2 of the International Telecommunication Union’s Global Cybersecurity Index and aims to reach Tier 1.

Deputy Prime Minister Zhaslan Madiyev named five priorities: safe use of AI, preparation for post-quantum protection, international technical cooperation, workforce development and domestic security products.

Why post-quantum cryptography is needed

Today’s encryption protects messages, electronic signatures and banking operations with mathematical problems that ordinary computers struggle to solve. Powerful quantum computers may eventually weaken some of those methods. Preparation therefore has to start early by mapping systems, replacing algorithms and testing compatibility.

A national roadmap can turn that concern into a sequence of accountable decisions: which data must remain secret longest, which systems move first and who verifies the migration.

Students are part of the plan

The conference also launched the CyberKumbez practical competition and Kazakhstan’s school team selection for the 2027 International Cybersecurity Olympiad in Italy. That turns broad “digital literacy” into a testable skill: identify a vulnerability, explain the risk and propose a defense.

The program continues on 30 September with Secure Development & Hack Day, including live attack demonstrations, real vulnerability reviews and secure development practices. The lasting value will depend on the rules, curricula and technical changes that follow the conference.
