More than 100 city leaders back WHO climate and health call: what it means

More than 100 leaders and representatives from 60 cities in 22 countries have backed a WHO Europe call to connect climate policy with residents’ health. Proposed areas include green space, active travel, food, housing and protection from extreme weather. A signature is a commitment, not yet proof of results.

Climate is also a health issue

On 7 October, WHO’s European office said more than 100 mayors and city representatives from 60 cities across 22 countries had signed the Cork Call to Action. It calls for urban climate decisions to account for health, covering nature, healthy food, walking and cycling, housing and extreme weather.

WHO says heat has contributed to more than 200,000 deaths since 2022 across the European Union and associated countries. That estimate applies to the specified region and period. It should not be presented as a Kazakhstan figure or as the outcome of one summer.

What a signature can and cannot do

The call sets a direction, but it is not itself a funded park, a safer street or a measured reduction in deaths. For residents, the useful results would be detailed city plans: cooler public spaces, safe routes to school, heat preparedness and transparent evaluation.

The discussion also matters for Kazakhstan’s hot cities. The lesson is to identify local risks and carry out measurable action, rather than simply copy a document from elsewhere.
