Food aid cannot reach 800,000 people in Yemen, WFP warns
Blocked routes and intensified fighting have cut access to people in Taiz and on the western coast.
The UN World Food Programme warned on 14 October that shifting front lines, blocked roads and insecurity have put 800,000 people in Yemen beyond its reach. More than 600,000 of them are in Taiz and rely on humanitarian assistance. Others are on the western coast, where access was lost earlier.
Why the timing matters
Taiz was already severely food insecure. WFP says wheat flour stocks are nearly exhausted in some inaccessible districts, and local market supplies may not last if routes stay closed. The agency has assisted more than 115,000 newly displaced people in places it can still reach.
What the figure means
The 800,000 figure is not a death toll or a new count of all hungry people. It is the number WFP currently cannot reach. More than 18 million people face acute food insecurity nationwide. The immediate test is whether aid convoys can move safely again.
