Astana Hub and Ghent University plan an AI and mathematics lab in Kazakhstan
The partners describe research plans at Alem.ai, including adaptive learning and Parkinson’s screening, but the lab is yet to open.
Kazakhstan’s Science and Higher Education Ministry said on 14 October that Astana Hub and Belgium’s Ghent University will open a joint AI and mathematics laboratory at Alem.ai. Its planned work was presented to Kazakhstan’s president and the Belgian royal couple. The ministry says the partners “will open” it; this is not yet an announcement of an operating laboratory.
The proposed work
The partners aim to connect fundamental mathematics with practical AI research and training for young scientists. Named initiatives include NeuroLearn, on adaptive learning and neuroscience, and ParkScreen, on AI-based early screening for Parkinson’s disease. Screening is not a diagnosis, and the ministry has not announced a clinically validated tool.
The evidence to watch
An actual opening date, research teams, published results and independent validation of medical methods will show whether the promise becomes useful work. For students, the potential benefit is access to joint projects and mentors in both countries once the programme starts.
