Astana-1 audited before reopening: can a wheelchair user travel the whole route alone?

Officials and disability advocates inspected the rebuilt station. Their recommendations still need to be put into practice.

Astana-1 railway station underwent a joint accessibility inspection ahead of reopening after reconstruction. Social protection officials, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the contractor, local authorities and the Vezdekhody team took part. The Labour Ministry reported the visit on 18 October and described recommendations, not a declaration that every barrier has been removed.

The group examined the route from the approach and entrances through ticket counters and reception areas to toilets and platforms. They looked at doors, wayfinding and whether a passenger can move safely without assistance. Continuity is the point: a good lift is of limited use if a heavy door or high threshold blocks the way to it.

The ministry says recommendations were passed to the client and contractor before the station enters service. Once it opens, the route should be tested in practice with a wheelchair user, a traveller using a cane and a parent with a stroller. The statement did not give an opening date or a list of completed fixes.
