Five wins to gold: how Kazakhstan’s épée team conquered Casablanca

Kazakhstan won the team World Cup event, beating Russia 45–40 in the final. Here is the route to gold and why it matters.

Kazakhstan’s men finished the Casablanca épée World Cup stage with team gold, defeating Russia 45–40 in the final. The Tourism and Sports Ministry named Kirill Prokhodov, Vadim Sharlaymov, Alexander Fedotov and Kirill Pavlov in the winning squad.

The route to the final ran through Turkey, 45–20; Hong Kong, 45–28; Egypt, 45–40; and France, 45–39. The quarterfinal and semifinal were particularly tight. A team épée score is the sum of touches across a sequence of bouts, so the lead can change when each fencer takes the piste. The 45–40 final therefore reflects the work of the whole quartet, not a single decisive flash.

The result also puts a less visible sport in front of Kazakhstani fans. The team has shown it can survive a demanding bracket against strong opponents. The next test is consistency across future stages: one gold medal is a notable achievement, while the season ranking depends on repeated results.
