Years without answers: Libya’s missing families get help navigating DNA and courts

UN staff reported legal and psychosocial sessions in Tarhuna and Tawergha attended by 50 relatives in September.

The UN Support Mission in Libya reported on October 17 on sessions with families of missing people in Tarhuna and Tawergha. The meetings themselves took place in September with UNDP and drew 50 relatives. The news is the publication of this account, not a claim that everyone missing has been found.

Lawyers explained how to report a disappearance, approach judicial authorities and seek DNA sampling and identification through the missing persons agency. Families also heard about civil documents, possible compensation and the return of remains. Without official identification, even obtaining necessary paperwork can be difficult.

Search and support

Counsellors addressed the burden of years of uncertainty. Conversation cannot replace an investigation or bring someone home, but it can help families avoid facing that uncertainty alone. More than 60 people remain missing in Tarhuna, according to the mission; families in Tawergha continue searching for relatives missing since the 2011 conflict.

The test after these sessions is whether guidance leads to accessible DNA procedures, documents and substantive answers from authorities. The UN report records support for families, not the completion of investigations.
