Shymkent and Hungary’s Debrecen discuss investment: what is agreed so far?
A Kazakh–Hungarian business forum brought Shymkent and Debrecen companies together to discuss manufacturing, infrastructure and investment. The city reported 500 billion tenge in investment over eight months of 2026. No value for new contracts was announced, and a city partnership memorandum was still planned.
Talks are not factories
On 7 October, Shymkent’s administration reported a business forum with a Hungarian delegation from Debrecen led by Mayor László Papp. Participants represented infrastructure, metalworking, machinery components and engineering design. Business meetings covered supplies, local production and possible joint projects.
The city said investment in Shymkent reached 500 billion tenge in the first eight months of 2026, compared with 559 billion for all of 2025. The periods differ, so the figures alone do not establish full-year growth.
What comes next
The administration announced a planned meeting with the city mayor and the signing of a sister-city memorandum. When the original report was published, the document was still a plan. It did not give the value of new contracts, name joint ventures or state when production might begin.
The real test will be signed deals, money actually invested and jobs created. For now, the forum marks contact between businesses rather than a confirmed new investment.
