Six countries plan a shared Golden Horde archive as Kazakhstan launches steppe-history consortium

Six national academies have agreed to study the Jochi Ulus and steppe history together, with fieldwork, a digital archive and an interactive atlas planned.

At a 16 October meeting of the Union of National Academies of Sciences of the Turkic World, academies from Kazakhstan, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia signed an agreement to create a consortium for the study of Steppe Civilization. Kazakhstan’s National Academy of Sciences initiated the project.

What is planned

The science ministry lists joint archaeological expeditions, a digital archive, a corpus of historical sources and an interactive historical atlas. Researchers also plan to digitize manuscripts and use geospatial methods. Their focus includes the Jochi Ulus, the Golden Horde, trade links and traditions of statehood.

For readers, the test will be accessible sources, searchable catalogues and verifiable research, rather than the signing ceremony alone. A 2027–2031 roadmap still needs to be drafted; the archive’s budget and public-access date have not been announced.
