WHO/Europe names Vienna centre for public participation in health care
Austria’s public health institute has been designated a WHO collaborating centre to strengthen the voices of patients and communities.
On 21 October, WHO/Europe designated the Austrian National Public Health Institute in Vienna as its first collaborating centre for social participation in health and care. It is intended to help countries involve patients, communities and civil society in discussions about health policy and services.
Planned work includes training, exchange of good practices, country support and assessment of how states implement the 2024 World Health Assembly resolution on social participation. The centre also plans to help develop indicators for measuring participation.
The designation does not transfer national health-policy decisions to the centre. Its role is technical support and research under WHO’s leadership. The cover is an illustration of participation, not a photograph of the designation.
