Construction begins on Aktogay copper smelter in Kazakhstan

The Abai Region project is designed for 300,000 tonnes of cathode copper a year; production has not yet begun.

On 20 October, Kazakhstan’s president launched construction of a copper smelter in Aktogay, Abai Region, by video link. According to the presidential office, KAZ Minerals is developing the project with China’s NFC as engineering partner. Announced investment is about $1.8 billion.

The planned plant is designed to produce 300,000 tonnes of cathode copper annually, as well as gold and sulfuric acid. Officials describe a full chain from mining and concentration to finished metal using the company’s own copper concentrate. These are design targets, not current output.

More than 1,000 jobs have been announced. Delivery dates, working conditions and environmental performance will determine the project’s actual benefit to nearby communities.
