Rain, Safety Cars and Verstappen’s Win: Formula 1 in Malaysia

Sepang hosted the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix on 4 October. Max Verstappen won the rain-hit race ahead of Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton. Here is how the weather, tyre calls and George Russell’s late retirement shaped the result.

Formula 1 raced at Sepang on 4 October under the unusual official name “Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia”. Rain forced teams to choose between intermediate and dry-weather tyres, while safety-car periods repeatedly reshaped the order.

The finish

According to Formula 1’s official race report, Max Verstappen took his first win of the season. Kimi Antonelli was second and Lewis Hamilton third after recovering from problems early in the race. Charles Leclerc finished fourth.

George Russell, who had been fighting near the front, retired when his car stopped late on. The series says Antonelli’s championship advantage over his teammate consequently grew to 84 points. The result was about more than raw car speed: tyre timing and the restarts mattered enormously.

The race name can be confusing. The cars competed in Malaysia, at Sepang; “Bahrain Grand Prix” was the event’s official relocated title, not its location.
