169 children can hear: why surgery is only the start

Kazakhstan has provided cochlear implants to 169 children in 225 operations. The state allocated KZT 1.81 billion, and 124 recipients were under five. The operation creates access to sound, but programming, rehabilitation and daily family practice determine how that access becomes speech.

225 operations for 169 children

Kazakhstan has provided cochlear implants to 169 children, the Ministry of Healthcare reported. Surgeons performed 225 operations because some patients required implants in both ears. The programme received KZT 1.81 billion, and 124 of the children were under five.

An implant is not switched on like ordinary headphones

Surgery is the first stage. After healing, usually about a month later, specialists activate and programme the speech processor. The child must then learn to distinguish sounds and connect them with language. Audiologists, teachers of the deaf and parents all take part in that process.

Why early diagnosis matters

The earlier severe hearing loss is identified and support begins, the more time a child has to develop speech alongside peers. Parents should seek professional advice if a baby does not react to loud sounds, turn towards a voice or develop speech as expected. Diagnosis and the decision to implant must remain with the medical team.
