170,000 vehicles in a month: what Kazakhstan's registration figure really means
The statistics bureau's September count tracks registrations, not sales of brand-new cars.
Kazakhstan registered 170,141 vehicles in September 2026, the National Statistics Bureau reported on 15 October. Passenger cars made up almost 88% of the month’s registrations. The total registered vehicle fleet stood at 6.1146 million on 1 October.
Registration is not the same as a new vehicle sale. Different administrative events can be captured in the count, so it would be misleading to describe 170,141 as new cars sold. The bureau also reports fuel types: 78.7% of September registrations were petrol-powered and 1.9% were electric.
The electric share is useful but one month alone cannot establish a long-term transition. That requires information on the existing fleet by powertrain and a series of monthly observations. The current release shows petrol vehicles still dominate the registration flow, while electric vehicles remain a small part of it.
