Rubin Observatory reports a dwarf planet candidate

Object 2026 ED138 lies beyond Pluto; its classification still needs confirmation.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory announced on 27 October that it had identified 2026 ED138, an object considered a candidate dwarf planet. It lies in the outer Solar System beyond Pluto’s orbit.

Scientists estimate its diameter at between 600 and 1,500 kilometres. Further observations are needed to refine its size and confirm its nature. Researchers also found it in archival images, helping them study its orbit. The initial detection preceded the public announcement.
