Kazakhstan has 42 million tonnes of winter feed: is the total enough for every farm?
The agriculture ministry reports large winter stocks, but concentrated feed is still below plan. Here is what the national total does and does not show.
Kazakh agricultural producers have prepared more than 42 million tonnes of feed of all types, the Agriculture Ministry said on 16 October, citing provisional regional data. Hay accounts for 26.9 million tonnes, or 104.8% of plan. Silage stands at 2.9 million tonnes and straw at 4.9 million.
The shortfall behind the headline
Haylage has reached 99.4% of plan; concentrated feed is at 95.8%, or 5.5 million tonnes. That does not establish a nationwide shortage. It does show why a large aggregate cannot guarantee equal access for every farm. Feed mix, transport and regional availability matter.
Farms also hold 3.6 million tonnes carried over from last winter. The Food Contract Corporation plans a reserve of feed grain. Regional balances and prices, when published, will give farmers a more useful picture of winter readiness than the single national total.
