Kenya confirms its first imported Bundibugyo virus case: what is known

WHO reports one confirmed imported Bundibugyo virus disease case in Kenya. The patient died and authorities are tracing contacts. The announcement does not establish widespread transmission in the country.

Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, WHO announced on 6 October. The patient became ill in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, travelled through Uganda and arrived in Nairobi on 3 October, where they were isolated in hospital. Two Kenyan laboratories confirmed the diagnosis. The patient died on the night of 5 October despite supportive care.

The response underway

Kenyan authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, and are tracing 23 fellow passengers and four crew members from the flight. Entry points and higher-risk groups are under surveillance. WHO says more than 652,000 arriving travellers had been screened by 6 October, 267 suspected samples tested and about 5,000 health workers trained.

What one imported case does not show

A single imported case does not establish local spread or a nationwide outbreak. Illness began in the DRC; contact tracing and later laboratory results will determine what follows. Based on information available now, WHO advises against travel or trade restrictions on Kenya, Uganda or the DRC.

This is a serious disease, so a precise timeline matters more than alarming generalisations. Further claims should wait for confirmation from health authorities.
