Nobel Prize in Medicine 2026: how light became a switch for neurons

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the Nobel Prize for work that enabled optogenetics. Light-sensitive proteins let researchers control cell activity and test how neural circuits function.

The Karolinska Institute named Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel as the 2026 Nobel laureates in physiology or medicine. Their work on light-gated ion channels enabled optogenetics.

How it works

When a cell contains the right light-sensitive protein, a pulse of light changes ion flow across its membrane. Researchers can activate or suppress selected neurons and observe the effects on a neural circuit. Compared with broad electrical stimulation, this can offer more precise control over which cells are affected and when.

Discovery is not a treatment

Optogenetics is a powerful research tool. The prize does not mean light-based treatment for brain disease has become routine clinical care. Moving from a laboratory result to a safe therapy requires further work.
