Aid trucks struck in Sudan: what the UN has confirmed so far
Two clearly marked World Food Programme trucks were hit in South Kordofan, and a driver was killed, the UN says. Responsibility for the strike has not been publicly established. Protecting aid workers and access for people awaiting food is the urgent issue.
The World Food Programme condemned a strike on two clearly marked humanitarian trucks in South Kordofan. In its 5 October report, the UN said the attack happened over the preceding weekend and killed a driver. The circumstances and responsibility for the strike require separate investigation.
The civilian cost
The trucks carried food for people dependent on assistance. When a convoy cannot reach its destination, danger extends beyond aid workers to families waiting for supplies.
What remains unknown
The UN report does not support naming a perpetrator or adding casualty figures beyond those announced. Humanitarian organisations are calling for protection of personnel and safe, unimpeded access. We will update the account as verified information emerges.
