A hidden hazard at home and work: WHO calls for faster action on lead

WHO estimates lead exposure contributes to more than 3.5 million deaths a year and is developing a prevention plan.

The World Health Organization called on countries on 15 October to remove sources of lead exposure faster. It estimates that exposure contributes to more than 3.5 million deaths globally each year. This is an estimate of population-level disease burden, not a count of confirmed acute poisoning cases.

Children are especially vulnerable because lead can impair development of the nervous system. WHO says no safe exposure level is known. Possible sources include some paints, cookware, cosmetics, spices, informal waste recycling and industrial pollution. Symptoms may not appear immediately. The presence of an item on that list does not diagnose a person or a home; testing and medical assessment are needed.

WHO plans a global action plan and its practical PREVENT package for 2027 to help governments identify sources, enforce safeguards and measure progress. In its latest published assessment, fewer than half of countries had confirmed legally binding controls on lead paint. The key shift is to remove hazards before lead enters a child’s bloodstream.
