WHO tackles a blind spot in TB research during pregnancy

WHO has launched a research toolkit to help include pregnant and breastfeeding women in tuberculosis drug and vaccine studies earlier and appropriately. Their historical exclusion has left gaps on safety and dosing. This is a resource for researchers and ethics bodies, not a new treatment instruction for patients.

The World Health Organization launched an online tuberculosis research toolkit on October 13 for studies involving pregnant and lactating women. It is aimed at researchers, trial sponsors, ethics committees and regulators, with the goal of making earlier, appropriate inclusion possible.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women have historically been excluded from TB drug and vaccine trials. That has left limited evidence on safety, dosing, how a medicine behaves in the body and how well it works for this population. Clinicians can consequently face decisions with less direct evidence than they would want.

WHO says the toolkit follows international consultations held in 2024 and 2025. It offers research approaches; it does not declare any particular medicine safe for every pregnant patient. People should not change treatment based on this news. Individual decisions belong with a clinician.

The initiative’s value will be tested over time through better trials, clearer evidence on benefits and risks and more useful clinical guidance. For now, the development is about improving how evidence is generated.
