Alatau breaks ground on Iconic Complex with two towers planned

Kazakhstan’s government announced a project exceeding $800 million, with completion targeted for late 2029.

A foundation-stone ceremony for the multifunctional Iconic Complex took place in Alatau, Kazakhstan’s Government Press Service reported on 26 October. Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev attended the event.

The announced investment exceeds $800 million. Plans include towers measuring 272 and 78 metres, accommodating offices, housing, hotels, retail and public spaces. China State Construction Engineering Corporation was named general contractor; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill prepared the architectural concept.

Completion is targeted for the end of 2029. That remains a schedule rather than an accomplished opening: the event reported now is the start of the project. Bozumbayev highlighted seismic safety, energy efficiency and participation by Kazakhstan-based companies and specialists.

The complex is intended for Alatau’s developing business centre. Government figures put citywide fixed-capital investment at 70.3 billion tenge over nine months, up by a factor of 1.6. That citywide statistic should not be confused with the budget of this individual development. Delivery of the plans will depend on construction progress and supporting utilities.
