Astana checks 2,900 homes before winter: a practical heating safety checklist

Inspectors have visited private homes, fitted alarms and cleaned chimneys ahead of the heating season. Here is what residents can check now. Astana's administration reported on 8 October that fire prevention visits had covered 2,900 private homes since 15 August, including homes of socially vulnerable families.

What the city has checked

Astana’s administration reported on 8 October that fire prevention visits had covered 2,900 private homes since 15 August, including homes of socially vulnerable families. Inspectors examine heating equipment and wiring, offer practical help and explain safe use.

More than 200 homes have received carbon monoxide, natural gas or smoke alarms, while chimneys were cleaned in 35 homes. Visits continue daily with emergency officials, police, local authorities, energy workers and volunteers. A home being counted as visited does not mean every hazard has been fixed.

What residents should do

Before using a stove regularly, have a qualified person check its chimney and draft. Do not leave electric heaters unattended, connect them to damaged wiring or place them close to flammable objects. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms matter especially at night: carbon monoxide has no smell and can incapacitate people before they recognise the danger.

If you smell gas or see signs of fire, leave the danger area and call 112. The point of the inspections is to reduce risks before freezing weather makes heating a constant necessity.
