Falconers from nine countries gather in Bozanbay for Asia Cup
East Kazakhstan is hosting the first Shyghys Salburyny Asian Cup in traditional hunting with birds of prey from 8 to 10 October. Organisers expect competitors from nine countries. Eagles, falcons and hawks will be tested at Bürkit Töbe near Bozanbay.
A traditional sport goes international
The first Shyghys Salburyny Asian Cup in hunting with trained birds of prey begins in East Kazakhstan on 8 October. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports scheduled the event for 8–10 October at Bürkit Töbe near the village of Bozanbay in Ulan district. Falconers from nine countries are expected.
The programme includes equipment checks, calling an eagle to the hand from 700 metres, a test with a lure, and competitions involving falcons and hawks. The winners are due to be awarded on 10 October. No results are available yet: the competition is just beginning as this article is prepared.
More than a spectacle
Sayatshylyk, traditional hunting with trained birds, involves years of patient work, knowledge of bird behaviour and responsibility for animal care. The cup is also an opportunity for East Kazakhstan to introduce visitors to its culture and local tourism.
Visitors should check the latest timetable and access arrangements with organisers before travelling, as the timing of individual events may change.
