OECD reviewed Kazakhstan’s statistics: what was assessed and what remains open?
Kazakhstan’s statistics bureau presented on 6 October the findings of an OECD expert review conducted in 2023–2025. The bureau describes a strong assessment; the full report is needed to verify its conclusions independently.
Kazakhstan’s Bureau of National Statistics presented findings on 6 October from an in-depth OECD expert review conducted in 2023–2025. In the bureau’s account, many areas are close to leading practice for accuracy, comparability, coverage, timeliness and access. That is significant, but this account is the bureau’s summary rather than an independent reading of the full review.
Why the measures matter
The way inflation, migration and employment are measured affects decisions on pay, budgets and school construction. The bureau says it already uses fiscal-data operators’ information to calculate inflation and mobile-positioning data to analyse tourism and migration. New sources can improve speed if their methods, coverage and privacy safeguards are clear.
An assessment is not a guarantee
An international review is stronger evidence than self-assessment, but it does not mean every published figure is error-free. Trust comes from accessible methods, records of revised series, explanations of discrepancies and the ability to reproduce a calculation. The bureau says it will expand open data, APIs and the principle of collecting information only once.
Before treating the phrase “high OECD assessment” as a final verdict, the bureau’s summary should be checked against the review itself, including its qualifications. For readers, the practical question is whether they can trace how a figure used in a public decision was produced.
