A new park opens in Shymkent’s Nurtas district: what residents get

A 1,800-square-metre neighbourhood park has opened along Akbota Street in Nurtas, with a playground, workout area, table tennis, seating and a fountain. The city says residents’ suggestions shaped the project, but has not published its cost or maintenance plan.

A new neighbourhood space

On 7 October, Shymkent’s city administration announced completion of a park along Akbota Street in the Nurtas district. The area covers 18 sotkas, or 1,800 square metres. It includes a children’s playground, outdoor exercise equipment, a table-tennis table, seating and a fountain.

The city says residents’ proposals and the social importance of the location were considered. Public funds paid for construction. Its announcement does not specify the project cost, contractor or how the site will be maintained.

The questions after opening day

For families, the park provides a place to walk and play near home. Its long-term value will also depend on safe equipment, summer shade, evening lighting, accessibility and regular care of plants and facilities.

The city has confirmed the park’s size and features. Without a budget and maintenance plan, it is not yet possible to compare its value for money with similar projects or judge how durable it will be.
