World Bank says off-grid solar is expanding electricity access
A new report puts users of off-grid solar products at 149 million, up from 118 million two years earlier.
The World Bank and the GOGLA association released a report on the off-grid solar market on 27 October. They say the number of people using solar home systems, pumps, generators, lanterns and other off-grid products rose from 118 million to 149 million over two years.
The report estimates that off-grid solar could be the least-cost way to provide electricity to at least 398 million people who lack access. This is an estimate of a potential solution, not the number already connected. Investment and policies that improve access to financing are needed to expand access, the authors say.
