AI in Kazakhstan’s schools: what was discussed with Kai-Fu Lee, and what remains a pilot?
The education ministry discussed classroom AI with Kai-Fu Lee and announced a memorandum between Orleu and Q.AI Limited. Support for teachers and rural schools is the goal. A memorandum and a platform pilot do not mean nationwide deployment has already happened.
On 5 October, Education Minister Zhuldyz Suleimenova met Kai-Fu Lee, head of Sinovation Ventures and 01.ai. They discussed teacher training, support for rural and small schools, and safe AI use. The ministry also announced a cooperation memorandum between the Orleu training centre and Q.AI Limited.
What is planned
A pilot national education AI platform aims to tailor learning, support teachers and analyse outcomes. The ministry says AI should extend teachers’ abilities rather than replace them.
Questions for parents
Which schools will test it? Who checks model errors? How are children’s data protected? Can teachers reject poor suggestions? Clear answers are needed before any nationwide rollout.
