Roman telescope enters science commissioning before routine observations

NASA reports that basic observatory checks are complete, with instrument calibration and image-quality refinement now under way.

NASA announced on 22 October that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope had entered science commissioning. The team confirmed that its main systems can guide, take exposures, transmit data and move between targets.

Planned test observations will calibrate instrument responses to light and refine image quality. Earlier checks demonstrated stable pointing in crowded star fields and dusty regions, where the guidance system might otherwise face greater difficulty.

Science commissioning comes before routine science operations. The announcement does not mean that the main survey programme has finished. The cover is an official NASA artist’s visualisation, rather than a photograph of the telescope in space.
