On 31 August the Kurultai confirmed Erlan Karin as Kazakhstan's first vice-president by 141 votes of 145. He is now first in line for power. He was chosen not for what he has but for what he lacks: no party, no business, no mandate — all of it forbidden to a vice-president by law.
Crimea in 2014, January 2022 in Kazakhstan and Russia's blitzkrieg against Kyiv are usually examined separately. They are links in one chain, and our regions from Kostanay to East Kazakhstan stood next in it. The chain did not break in talks or under sanctions. It broke outside Kyiv.
For weeks he refused to rule out military force against Greenland. European troops arrived and eight governments publicly backed Denmark. On 21 January he ruled force out. Greenland, tariffs, Iran, a third term — four times he reached a wall, and not once did he stop himself.

A glacier collapse in Nepal killed more than 350 people, with almost no warning possible. The mudflow dam above Almaty is the opposite: its danger is known in advance. It should shield thirty thousand people, and has stood unfinished for six years. 22 billion tenge spent, the site mothballed, its bank reinforced with sandbags.
Kazakhstan's state information order runs to about 67 billion tenge a year, while schools, hospitals and local administrations are still handed subscription quotas from above. What that money buys, how support for the press differs from a leash, and why the famine and Semipalatinsk are stories about a silent press.
The Gulf war, resurgent inflation and the crash in AI stocks are three July 2026 stories with one cause. On 8 July the IMF cut its global growth forecast to 3.0% and raised inflation to 4.7%, naming both. The condition has a name: stagflation. Thirty years of cheap money were borrowed from the future, and the margin call has arrived.
