What makes an atom belong to an element?

Define atoms and elements by proton count, not the colour of a model sphere.

Situation and question

Two classroom drawings use the same colour for their ‘atoms’. Does that prove they are the same element? No: the artist chose the colour.

New terms, fully explained

An atom is the smallest particle retaining an element’s chemical identity. A chemical element groups atoms with the same number of protons in their nuclei. A proton has positive charge; the number of protons is the atomic number. One proton means hydrogen, six carbon and eight oxygen. A molecule and a simple substance are different concepts.

Predict first

Predict: neutral atoms A and B have six and eight protons respectively. Are they the same element? What if only their neutron counts differ?

Investigate or analyse given data

Use cards instead of chemicals: A has six protons and six neutrons; B has eight and eight; C has six and seven. Group them by element. Model spheres are not drawn to scale.

Worked example

A and C are carbon atoms because both have six protons; B is oxygen with eight. A and C differ in neutron count without changing element identity. We will examine isotopes separately. C and O are standard chemical symbols, not arbitrary colours.

A common mistake

Mistake: confusing an element with one molecule or with a drawing’s colour. Oxygen as an element has atomic number eight; O₂ gas is a simple substance made of two-atom molecules. Atomic number is not the atom’s total mass.

Transfer to a new case

Compare cards with one and two protons. Could dissolving table salt turn one into the other? Explain the boundary of an ordinary chemical process.

Answer and recall

Check: one proton identifies hydrogen, two identify helium; dissolving does not change nuclei or atomic numbers. Rebuild the rule ‘proton count → element’ and test it with three cards unaided.

Knowledge check

  1. Are atoms with six and eight protons one element?
  2. What fixes element identity?

Answers: No; proton count.

When to revisit

Close the page and, after 10 minutes, reconstruct the map, define the terms in your own words and solve the new case. Repeat without hints after a day and a week. If an error persists, return to the worked example and write down the missing step.
