Physics around us: from a first experiment to your own lab Lesson 94 of 100
Where does a measurement begin?
Write a procedure someone else can repeat.
Question and prediction
Two learners measured one cart run. One placed the ruler zero at the ramp exit, the other at the table edge. Their numbers differ though the cart is unchanged. They must agree on start and end points before measuring. Without them, numerical comparisons are meaningless.
New words without gaps
The zero mark starts the horizontal run. The end mark is the front axle’s position when the cart has fully stopped. Another reference point works if used consistently. A scale division is the gap between adjacent ruler marks. A ruler marked every 1 cm does not justify claiming hundredths of a centimetre. A repeat is a fresh release, not rereading the same stop.
Work through supplied data
The supplied paper trials are 82, 84, 83 cm. Table headings: surface; trial; distance, cm; note. If a broken zero is replaced with the 2 cm mark and the cart stops at 84 cm, the distance is 84 − 2 = 82 cm. The number 84 is a position on a scale, not the distance travelled.
Test safely
Write exact instructions for someone else: secure a low ramp; mark release height and zero; cover only the horizontal run; release without a push; mark the axle at rest; read the ruler at eye level; record a number and unit. Mark and repeat a disturbed trial instead of silently erasing it.
A common mistake
Mistake: moving the origin between series. Transfer: the starting ruler mark is 5 cm and the final mark is 50 cm. What is the run? Why is it 45 cm, not 50 cm?
Support diagram
Check your understanding
Close the text and explain the left-to-right drawing to a new learner. Name an observation, a teaching assumption and something the evidence does not prove. Then answer the transfer question without a hint and check units or direction against the diagram. If you disagree, return to the first unfamiliar word rather than memorising a sentence. A spoken explanation, a drawing and a measurement are different kinds of evidence: label each honestly.
Lab notebook page
Add a line to My World Lab Notebook: question → prediction → controlled conditions → changed condition → observation or calculation → conclusion → limit. Put a scale on a drawing or mark it ‘schematic’. If you ran no experiment, write ‘supplied calculation’, not ‘we measured’. Revisit the entry after the next lesson and note what became clearer.
