Physics around us: from a first experiment to your own lab Lesson 99 of 100
How does measurement become a design decision?
Set a limit, choose a candidate and plan a new test.
Question and prediction
Imagine a paper model of a shelf with a soft barrier after 60 cm. Which covering might stop the cart sooner? We now need more than a difference between surfaces: we have a specific requirement. Never release a real cart near a table edge. The shelf is a thought experiment; tests belong in a spacious safe area.
New words without gaps
A criterion is a measurable condition of success: a run no longer than 60 cm. A constraint is a rule to keep: the same cart, a low ramp and a safe stop. A prototype is a trial version of a design. Iteration is the cycle “version, test, change, retest”. A margin is the distance between limit and result, but mean margin cannot replace checking individual runs.
Work through supplied data
Supplied means are 83 cm for paper and 45 cm for fabric. Paper exceeds the limit by 83 − 60 = 23 cm. Fabric has a mean margin of 60 − 45 = 15 cm. Even its longest supplied run, 46 cm, is below 60. Fabric is a candidate, not a safety certificate: real variation has not been measured.
Test safely
Write the criterion before selecting a material. Plan at least three fresh releases on secured fabric and record every value, even inconvenient ones. If a run exceeds 60 cm, change the design and run a new series; do not edit the old table. Without equipment, make a precise plan and say plainly that no test was done.
A common mistake
Mistake: declaring success from a 45 cm mean while hiding a new 63 cm run. Transfer: the new goal is at least 70 cm of travel. Which covering is now promising? Why has the meaning of “better” changed?
Support diagram
Check your understanding
Close the text and explain the left-to-right drawing to a new learner. Name an observation, a teaching assumption and something the evidence does not prove. Then answer the transfer question without a hint and check units or direction against the diagram. If you disagree, return to the first unfamiliar word rather than memorising a sentence. A spoken explanation, a drawing and a measurement are different kinds of evidence: label each honestly.
Lab notebook page
Add a line to My World Lab Notebook: question → prediction → controlled conditions → changed condition → observation or calculation → conclusion → limit. Put a scale on a drawing or mark it ‘schematic’. If you ran no experiment, write ‘supplied calculation’, not ‘we measured’. Revisit the entry after the next lesson and note what became clearer.
